Karyotaki et al [27], for example, found some advantageous effects of guided versus unguided internet-based CBT (i CBT) for depression, but these differences disappeared at the 6-month and 12-month follow-up. This has important practical implications, as offering human support exerts greater pressure on extant resources and could thus limit implementation on a large scale (ie, in a university setting).

This finding, however, contrasts with results of Karyotaki et al [21] who found that self-guided internet-based interventions are effective regardless of symptom severity. Interestingly, within another study by Karyotaki et al [73], it was found that individuals with more severe baseline symptoms were more likely to improve than individuals with less severe baseline symptoms after treatment with guided internet-based interventions, which means that the findings are still ambiguous in this respect.
