Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating and degenerative disease of the central nervous system and the most common nontraumatic cause of disability in young adults worldwide [1]. The dominant phenotype is characterized by relapses (attacks) and remissions, known as relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). In the majority of those affected with RRMS, the condition evolves, within 10 to 15 years, into secondary progressive MS (SPMS).
