The GEE model is specified as follows: Yi j= β0 + β1 (CHEC policy)j + β2 disease𝑖 + β3 (CHEC policy × disease)ij + εij, where Yij represents the outcome variable (eg, diagnosis indicator, treatment indicator, mortality, or medical use) for individual i at time j. β0 is the intercept, capturing the baseline level of the outcome for the reference disease (ie, major trauma) in the pre-CHEC period.
