In this study, we examined the role of sentiment in predicting openness of communication about genetic cancer risk associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome. HBOC is a hereditary cancer syndrome that affects both men and women and accounts for a significant number of different cancers, such as breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate [27].

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Office for Public Health Genomics recommend genetic testing in cancer-free individuals with a known HBOC family history and in patients with cancer who have strong indications of HBOC syndrome (eg, ovarian cancer) [13]. Cascade genetic screening is a systematic effort to identify and test all blood relatives of HBOC cases to determine whether they also carry the same pathogenic variant [10].
