Leptospirosis in Aotearoa New Zealand: Protocol for a Nationwide Case-Control Study

Leptospirosis in Aotearoa New Zealand: Protocol for a Nationwide Case-Control Study

The disease is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira, which includes >71 species [7] and >300 serovars worldwide [8]. Pathogenic species of Leptospira colonize the kidneys of mammals, as well as birds, amphibians, and reptiles [9], and this leads to intermittent urinary shedding. High-risk populations vary spatially and temporally and include those in contact with infected animals (livestock or wildlife) or contaminated environments (water, mud, or soil) [4].
