Development and Testing of a Mobile App for Management of Gestational Diabetes in Nepal: Protocol for a User-Centered Design Study and Exploratory Randomized Controlled Trial

Development and Testing of a Mobile App for Management of Gestational Diabetes in Nepal: Protocol for a User-Centered Design Study and Exploratory Randomized Controlled Trial

In Nepal, a low-income country in South Asia, the national prevalence of GDM is not documented, but regional estimates are high, ranging from 6.6% to over 20% [4-6]. GDM is associated with increased risks of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, including preeclampsia, birth injuries, labor complications, cesarean delivery, and large for gestational-age babies [7-9].

South Asia’s COVID-19 History and Surveillance: Updated Epidemiological Assessment

South Asia’s COVID-19 History and Surveillance: Updated Epidemiological Assessment

We adopt the World Bank’s definition of South Asia, which is based on economic development and geographical proximity, encompassing Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka [7]. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the end of COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern on May 5, 2023 [8-10], based on the recommendation of the COVID-19 Emergency Committee [10].

Designing and Developing a Mobile App for Management and Treatment of Gestational Diabetes in Nepal: User-Centered Design Study

Designing and Developing a Mobile App for Management and Treatment of Gestational Diabetes in Nepal: User-Centered Design Study

South Asians, who represent approximately one-fourth of the world’s population, are at a disproportionately higher risk of GDM [1-3], and the prevalence of GDM is increasing rapidly in South Asian countries, including Nepal [3-5]. Geographically situated between the two epicenters of the global diabetes epidemic, India and China [6], Nepal has a reported GDM prevalence ranging from 6.6% to 28% [7-9].

Feasibility and Effectiveness of an Intervention to Reduce Intimate Partner Violence and Psychological Distress Among Women in Nepal: Protocol for the Domestic Violence Intervention (DeVI) Cluster-Randomized Trial

Feasibility and Effectiveness of an Intervention to Reduce Intimate Partner Violence and Psychological Distress Among Women in Nepal: Protocol for the Domestic Violence Intervention (DeVI) Cluster-Randomized Trial

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Nepal, witness higher rates of IPV. During the first wave of the pandemic, gender-based violence among women and girls increased by 2.7% in Nepal compared to the prepandemic period [5].

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Interventions to Improve the Follow-up Rate for Children With Visual Disabilities in an Eye Hospital in Nepal: Nonrandomized Study

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Interventions to Improve the Follow-up Rate for Children With Visual Disabilities in an Eye Hospital in Nepal: Nonrandomized Study

Therefore, in order to improve the follow-up of children with visual impairment in BEH and Nepal in general, we intended to assess the effectiveness of different kinds of interventions to improve follow-up in these client groups. The aim of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of 2 different interventions, namely counseling and SMS and phone calls, against routine standard care to improve follow-up of children with visual impairment in BEH Nepal. This is a nonrandomized, quasiexperimental study.

The Effect of Particulate Matter Exposure During Pregnancy on Pregnancy and Child Health Outcomes in South Asia: Protocol for an Instrumental Variable Analysis

The Effect of Particulate Matter Exposure During Pregnancy on Pregnancy and Child Health Outcomes in South Asia: Protocol for an Instrumental Variable Analysis

In cross-country comparisons of fine particulate matter with a diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5), Bangladesh has emerged as the country with the highest population-weighted levels, Pakistan has the second highest levels, India has the third highest levels, and Nepal has the 12th highest levels [1]. The elevated levels of air pollution and the large number of exposed people result in significant air pollution–related mortality and morbidity in South Asia.

Augmenting the Referral Pathway for Retinal Services Among Patients With Diabetes Mellitus at Reiyukai Eiko Masunaga Eye Hospital, Nepal: Protocol for a Nonrandomized, Pre–Post Intervention Study

Augmenting the Referral Pathway for Retinal Services Among Patients With Diabetes Mellitus at Reiyukai Eiko Masunaga Eye Hospital, Nepal: Protocol for a Nonrandomized, Pre–Post Intervention Study

DR is an emerging cause of blindness in developing countries such as Nepal. Mishra et al [5] reported that 10% of people with DM had some form of DR in Nepal. The prevalence of nonproliferative DR, proliferative DR, and complete vision loss was 9.1%, 0.5%, and 0.3%, respectively, in Nepal [5]. Awareness about retinopathy remains very poor in Nepal and therefore, there is a need to sensitize the public about diabetic eye diseases [6].
