Changing Trends in the Global Burden of Cataract Over the Past 30 Years: Retrospective Data Analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Changing Trends in the Global Burden of Cataract Over the Past 30 Years: Retrospective Data Analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

According to our findings, the ASDRs of cataracts varied significantly between regions and nations and were lower in high-income regions and countries, while SDI and HDI were negatively correlated with cataract ASDR. A higher quality of eye care and increasing opportunities for cataract surgery may explain this association in countries with high SDI and HDI scores. Although surgery is the definitive therapy for cataract, many major barriers to cataract treatment still exist [33].

Deferring Postoperative Follow‑Up Visits up to 4 Weeks After Uneventful Cataract Surgery in a Tertiary Level Eye Hospital: Protocol for a Prospective, Quantitative, Experimental Control Study

Deferring Postoperative Follow‑Up Visits up to 4 Weeks After Uneventful Cataract Surgery in a Tertiary Level Eye Hospital: Protocol for a Prospective, Quantitative, Experimental Control Study

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in lower- and middle-income countries [1,2]. Surgery is the only available treatment that is highly cost-effective and capable of significantly improving visual function [3,4]. Cataract surgery often achieves an excellent visual outcome with low rates of complication [5,6]. Routine examination after cataract surgery, including a refraction test a few weeks after surgery, is mandatory in most hospitals [7,8].

Safety and Acceptability of a Natural Language Artificial Intelligence Assistant to Deliver Clinical Follow-up to Cataract Surgery Patients: Proposal

Safety and Acceptability of a Natural Language Artificial Intelligence Assistant to Deliver Clinical Follow-up to Cataract Surgery Patients: Proposal

One area of care where improved efficiency is urgently needed is cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is the most common operation in the National Health Service (NHS), with approximately 450,000 procedures conducted per year [3]. COVID-19 has caused record delays in receiving planned surgeries [4], and the average wait time for cataract surgery was approximately 2.5 months [5].

A Digital Patient-Led Hospital Checklist for Enhancing Safety in Cataract Surgery: Qualitative Study

A Digital Patient-Led Hospital Checklist for Enhancing Safety in Cataract Surgery: Qualitative Study

To increase patient participation in enhancing safe care, we developed an online checklist called the EYEpad for cataract patients to be used during their admission. Cataract surgery involves removal of opaque lens and replacement with an implanted artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is the most frequently performed surgery in the world [23]. The feasibility of this checklist—in terms of utilization, appreciation, and impact—according to patients and nurses has not yet been determined.

Two-Way Social Media Messaging in Postoperative Cataract Surgical Patients: Prospective Interventional Study

Two-Way Social Media Messaging in Postoperative Cataract Surgical Patients: Prospective Interventional Study

Some specific examples include medication adherence in glaucoma [14], general outpatient clinic visit adherence [15,16], and postsurgical follow-up for pediatric cataract [17] and trabeculoplasty [18]. Cataract surgery has not yet been impacted by social media and messaging apps. This may be related to the lower use of these platforms in elderly populations with vision problems, but that is starting to change as patients, even older ones, increasingly use and rely on this technology [19].
