The first infant was enrolled into the OBOE study in August 2020, and the OBOE study began developing the consenter video a year later to assist with the slower-than-anticipated enrollment and to enhance participant diversity. The Insight Center Family Needs calculator estimated the minimum income required to live in San Francisco in 2021 without public or private assistance as US $60,232 for a single adult, US $120,519 for a single adult with 1 preschooler, and US $167,432 for a household with 2 adults, 1 infant, and 1 preschooler [26]. To meet the needs of a family of three, Black and Pacific Islander households would have needed to earn 4 and 2 times their current average incomes, respectively.

Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is a leading cause of death among US infants, with nonrecommended sleep practices reported in most of these deaths [1]. After a major decrease in the SUID rate immediately after the American Academy of Pediatrics released its 1992 recommendation that infants be placed on their backs to sleep, the rate has plateaued despite extensive educational efforts [2,3].

As the participants were younger than 2 years old, measurements were taken supine by 2 investigators using an infant length board. The average of the 2 measurements was recorded as the participant’s body length and used as input to the LAI algorithm. If the 2 measurements differed by more than 0.5 cm, a third measurement was taken and the average of the three measurements was used.
