Understanding Loneliness Through Analysis of Twitter and Reddit Data: Comparative Study

Understanding Loneliness Through Analysis of Twitter and Reddit Data: Comparative Study

Because social media and technology are more frequently used by the younger generation, they are helpful for analyzing loneliness. A previous report provided a theoretical explication of loneliness, loneliness informatics, and the gaps in research on the topic of loneliness informatics, that is, the application of informatics tools to study loneliness [5].

Migrant-Local Differences in the Relationship Between Oral Health, Social Support, and Loneliness Among Older Adults in Weifang, China: Cross-Sectional Study

Moreover, another national study in China clarified that a high degree of loneliness could further reduce the life satisfaction of older adults [20]. A cohort study from northern and southern Europe showed that loneliness was associated with a decreased quality of life among older adults [21]. Therefore, it is important to pay more attention to older adults’ loneliness and find possible ways to reduce their loneliness.

The Moderated Mediating Effects of Social Media Identity and Loneliness on the Relationship Between Problematic Internet Use and Mental Health in China: Nationwide Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study

One assumption regarding the link between PIU and mental health disorders is that PIU is inherently connected to loneliness [25]. Although loneliness is not a specific mental health condition, it is associated with major mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety. The effect of internet use on loneliness remains a subject of debate.

Therapeutic Potential of Social Chatbots in Alleviating Loneliness and Social Anxiety: Quasi-Experimental Mixed Methods Study

Therapeutic Potential of Social Chatbots in Alleviating Loneliness and Social Anxiety: Quasi-Experimental Mixed Methods Study

Loneliness, social anxiety, and positive or negative affect were measured as the main outcomes at baseline (week 0), midpoint (week 2), and at the end of the study (week 4) for a total of 3 times. Loneliness was assessed using the 20-item UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS) [15,16], which measures the chronic characteristics and state of loneliness. Social anxiety was measured with the 24-item Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) [17,18], which evaluates the situational aspects of social phobia.

Trends in Mental Health Outcomes of College Students Amid the Pandemic (Roadmap mHealth App): Longitudinal Observational Study

That is, in any given year, students with more loneliness or more depression had lower flourishing (β=–.169 and –.071, respectively), while average loneliness, anxiety, and depression also decreased with the passage of time (β=–.127, –.229, and –.145, respectively). Although a formal mediation analysis confirmed the mediating role of loneliness on flourishing, anxiety and depression were not significant mediators of the relationship between pandemic year or severity and flourishing (Multimedia Appendix 2).

Adapting the Technology Acceptance Model to Examine the Use of Information Communication Technologies and Loneliness Among Low-Income, Older Asian Americans: Cross-Sectional Survey Analysis

Adapting the Technology Acceptance Model to Examine the Use of Information Communication Technologies and Loneliness Among Low-Income, Older Asian Americans: Cross-Sectional Survey Analysis

Loneliness is defined as a subjective experience stemming from perceived isolation or a disparity in one’s desired and actual social interactions [2]. In the CHIS, Asian American older adults reported significantly lower levels of perceived social and emotional support (56%) as compared with non–Asian American older adults (80%) [3]. During the COVID-19 pandemic, loneliness increased among older Americans, and even today, loneliness levels are higher as compared with prepandemic levels [4].

Evaluating a Smart Textile Loneliness Monitoring System for Older People: Co-Design and Qualitative Focus Group Study

Loneliness is a common experience in later life and describes a subjective feeling, whereas social isolation is an objective state that is not necessarily associated with felt loneliness [1,2]. While people can be alone and lonely, they can also be lonely while cohabiting with their families [3].

Using Digital Art and Attachment Priming in a Web-Based Serious Game to Reduce Pain and Social Disconnection in Individuals With Chronic Pain and Loneliness: Randomized Controlled Trial

Using Digital Art and Attachment Priming in a Web-Based Serious Game to Reduce Pain and Social Disconnection in Individuals With Chronic Pain and Loneliness: Randomized Controlled Trial

Consider that 1-shot exposure to digital art (ie, a Monet painting) decreases loneliness and anxiety primarily by improving positive social affect relative to no art exposure [31]. However, these studies raise placebo and Hawthorne effect concerns because both digital art and no-art exposure had positive effects on well-being [31,32]. Placebo effects refer to improvement resulting from the administration of an inert treatment with no specific therapeutic properties [33].

Social Gaming to Decrease Loneliness in Older Adults: Recruitment Challenges and Attrition Analysis in a Digital Mixed Methods Feasibility Study

Social Gaming to Decrease Loneliness in Older Adults: Recruitment Challenges and Attrition Analysis in a Digital Mixed Methods Feasibility Study

In the Netherlands, people younger than 55 years (20%) and 95 years (62%) experience moderate to severe loneliness [1] according to the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJG) [2,3]. Loneliness increases with age due to social network changes, availability of family members and friends, opportunities for transportation, and health problems [4-6]. Loneliness, in turn, exacerbates these health factors [7], thus creating a negative feedback loop.
