MM: mindfulness meditation; SCM: self-compassion meditation. SCM and MM were set as the intervention conditions and waitlist as the control condition, and the 3 groups were compared. Participants assigned to the SCM and MM groups will use a smartphone app to engage in guided meditation on their own once a day (Multimedia Appendix 1). The duration of all intervention conditions is 4 weeks. Both SCM and MM interventions contain elements of mindfulness.

The most common types of mindfulness activities used by 84 participants who reported any type of activity were meditation (n=57, 68%), yoga (n=53, 63%), breathing (n=32, 38%), music (n=17, 20%), movement (eg, walking; n=10, 12%), and art-based activities (eg, coloring; n=5, 6%). Among survey participants, 53 (48%) reported using meditation apps. You Tube (n=17, 32%), Spotify or other podcast apps (n=10, 19%), Headspace (n=8, 15%), and calm (n=7, 13%) were the most used meditation apps or websites.
