Phenomenology is the philosophical approach aimed at studying phenomena as they are experienced by individuals. Adopting a phenomenological approach therefore largely entails the incorporation of lived experience into the investigation [23]. This entails using the Husserlian lens of phenomenology [24], which underscores the necessity of epochè as an essential methodological approach for the examination of experiences. This is crucial in the development of conscious digital health solutions.

Emotional Expression on Social Media Support Forums for Substance Cessation: Observational Study of Text-Based Reddit Posts

Here, we used spontaneous, self-directed reports provided under relative anonymity in a naturalistic setting (via public forums available on Reddit) generated by hundreds of thousands of subjects to examine the phenomenology of the subjective experience of substance use cessation across 3 of the most common substances of abuse. To apply a transdiagnostic lens, we chose emotion words instead of more addiction-specific features, allowing us to contrast results against the control population of Reddit users.
