Perinatal loss, that is, miscarriage (>20 weeks), stillbirth (>20 weeks gestation), or neonatal death (newborn in the first 28 days of life) [56], is an unexpected and complex negative life event, an experience that has always been poorly investigated. If we consider the period prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 2 million perinatal deaths (stillbirths) and 2.9 million neonatal deaths occur worldwide every year [57].
